RVF400 Newbee

Post by gjnrs » Tue May 24, 2011 9:57 am

Hello All,

Bought an RVF400 at the weekend and forgot how much I have missed these fantastic 400cc machines.
This is my first RVF, always had GSXR400's back in the early 90's, could not afford the RVF's back then.

Only rode the bike for a few miles on the test ride but gave me a big smile!!!

Now going to give the bike a thorough service/ overhaul before it goes back on the road for what looks to be the best biking summer in years.

The bottom rad looks to be a bit clogged with road dirt and could do with a good clean!!
Any other things I need too look for while the fairing are off?

Paul

Depending upon the level of servicing/refurb, then -

Clean and then inspect engine and frame, the unpainted engine can corrode.
Steam clean rads.
Look at routing/position of cables and components to see if they are correct or can be improved upon.
Look for any fluid leaks [unusual]
Check/grease/replace shock link bearings and replace any corroded M10 nuts.
Clean/replace plugs.
Change oil/filter.
Run up motor, if it does not idle/respond, then consider removing and cleaning/balancing carbs.
Check torque of engine mount bolts.
Check alternator/rectifier plug and socket connector for burning, but nc30 seem to suffer more.

Remove gearbox sprocket cover and clean grease from within and all around.

Later, derestrict with 2K resistor across speedo wires [loom side] if needed, and replace 35W dip lamp with a 50w and relay.

You will then have your 35 nearly as good or even better than an NC30.
Dave.

Dave.

Note I said nearly as good, or even better, but that depends upon each riders opinion of course.
I can find no fault with either the front end or the rear shock, but then maybe that says more about me than the 2 bikes.

I do dislike the unpainted engine and loads of stickers on the body work, so I suppose in the end my NC30 is just as good as my NC35 taken all around.

Dave. Who cares?

Thanks Dave for all your tips,
One area I have found that I am not happy with is a rusty exhaust joint.
Its not leaking but sure to cause a problem in the future.
My plan is to remove the 2 rusty steel parts and tig weld on 2 new pieces of Stainless Steel, is this a usual modification?

Also the exhaust can is very noisy!! Must be gettig old. Its has "Renagade" on it and although is has a BS number its a bit too noisy for me. Anyone want to swap for a standard can?
